HAZARDS ON DAIRY FARMS AND HOW TO REDUCE THEM

The largest hazard encountered by Dairy farmers is the movement of cattle. This is an unavoidable risk since they have to be moved twice per day for milking. Corners and slopes more that 6% should be avoided at cow entry points. As well as increasing safety for both the farmer and the livestock, cows move faster in straight lines thereby speeding up the task.
Slips and falls are common accidents, particularly around dairy farms. Wearing slip resistant footwear is an obvious prevention measure that is fast, easy and inexpensive to apply. Other good safety practice tips include such things as cleaning up spills quickly and removing algae with high pressure washing, removing manure from sheds and roadways and providing good light and ventilation in the cowsheds.
Muck is an unavoidable hazard in farm yards throughout the year. During winter, as the ground freezes, there is an increased likelihood of slipping and falling. If possible, grooving your concrete surfaces will help enormously in preventing these types of accidents.
