Part-Time Farmer's Insurance

  • Part Time farmers typically need cover for machinery, outbuildings, livestock and crucially Public Liability.
  • Some insurers on our panel allow you to add a secondary occupation under your farm policy. For example, farmer/dog grooming or farmer/food manufacturer or farmer/guesthouse.
  • Even if you lease out your land, you still need public liability cover.

NEED TO GET A YOUNG DRIVER NAMED ON YOUR FARM JEEP?

It's inexpensive and practical to insure your sons and daughters on your jeep as a named driver if you have a farm insurance policy – not matter how small the policy is. The jeep can be any age and can be a 2 seater or 5 seater crew cab. For example, the additional premium to add on an 18 year old with a learner’s permit is around €570 per year or with a full licence, around €320 per year.

WHY DO I NEED PUBLIC LIABILITY COVER IF I LEASE MY LAND TO A FARMER?

This is a question we are often asked, particularly when the farmer to whom the land is being leased has his/her own farm insurance policy. Bottom line is that you, as property owner, can still be held responsible for any injury sustained on your land. For example – say there are walkers/hikers crossing your land. One of them falls into a ditch and breaks his ankle. The injured party can take an action against you, as land owner, for damages. He will of course have to prove that you are negligent in your duty as landowner, but you will need legal defence and the public liability section of your farm insurance policy will cover this. This second example happened to one of our clients. Water draining from land that was leased to a farmer collected on a public road. A person driving along the road crashed and alleged he “water planed” because of the water collecting on the road. He took an action against our client as land owner. The farm policy that we had arranged for her kicked in and defended her successfully.

WHO CAN OPERATE MY FARM MACHINERY?

Mechanically propelled vehicles can be operated by anybody with a licence to drive a tractor and you are eligible for this from age 14. So once the driver has a licence and your permission, it is in order for that person to operate your machinery. Furthermore, that person is insured to operate your machinery. It is still very advisable to closely supervise young people, make them attend safety courses and always ensure that they are easily able to reach all of the pedals and operating controls. Keep them away from rivers, steep slopes and play areas.

WHY PART TIME FARMERS NEED TO TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY

According to the HSA 10% of all farming related deaths are children and of these 81% involve tractors or machinery.

Farming remains the most dangerous type of work in Ireland. Despite small numbers working in agriculture, the fatality rate is higher than any other sector. It is also particularly dangerous for older people. 43% of all fatalities on farms are by people aged 65 or more and of these, 43% involve machinery or tractors and 26% involve livestock. It is important to remind older farmers to seek help and to become aware of the ageing effects of balance and mobility.
