INSURANCE FOR FARM JEEPS

Most farms have jeeps and we recommend that you always insure them on your farm policy under the agricultural vehicle section. Farm Jeeps do not need or earn a "no claims bonus". This means that you can “save” your no claims bonus for your private car. Farm jeeps can be any age – brand new or an old vehicle.

These jeeps can, in theory, be insured for use on the farm only or for farm plus social, pleasure and domestic use. We always recommend that you insure them for the wider use. In fact, we don’t offer farm use only - as we believe it’s far too restrictive.

We can add on any young driver once he or she has a full licence to any 2 seater jeep , van or 5 seater crew cab. The young driver will be named and the policy will be open driving for anybody aged between 25 and 70 with a full licence. Additional premiums for adding the young driver will depend on his or her age.

FARM INSURANCE QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU RENEW

We will send you out your farm insurance renewal notice one month before your farm policy is due for renewal. This should be your reminder to ask yourself (and tell us) what has changed on your farm over the past year. We find that many farmers are continually making improvements, small and large, to their farms. Examples of small improvements include things like installing new fencing or posts, upgrading sheds and tanks, strengthening outbuildings, adding an alarm system or CCTV and maybe even acquiring additional land.

Some of these things need to be notified to your insurer and others could lead to a reduction in premium. So, take the annual arrival of your farm insurance renewal notice as a reminder to give us a ring and talk about your farm. Armed with this updated information, our team of farm insurance experts will approach the various insurance companies on your behalf and obtain terms and quotations. They will then be able to go through the various offers with you before your farm insurance renewal date. This will let you make a fully informed decision as to what level of cover you need and what your premium will be for the coming insurance year.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED AGRI CONTRACTING INSURANCE?

If you use your farm machinery, farm equipment, farm vehicles or labour in connection with an agricultural or farming activity on somebody else’s land then you are engaging in Agri-Contracting. You need insurance to cover you for this activity. This is very important.

Even if money doesn’t exchange hands and you are merely doing a favour for a neighbouring farm, such as cutting hedges, if something goes wrong, you could be liable. Therefore, you need this cover.

However, don’t worry. This extension to your farm insurance policy will cost you little extra, if anything. Most often, we’ll note that you engage in a small amount of agri-contracting – no more than 5% of your total farm income coming from this activity. Three of the four farm insurance providers in Ireland are happy to note this on your policy and cover you for agri-contracting.

ARE MY FAMILY COVERED UNDER MY FARM INSURANCE POLICY – SHOULD AN ACCIDENT HAPPEN?

Yes – under the farm insurance employer’s liability section. This section provides cover for your legal liability to your family and volunteers in respect of claims for personal injury resulting from accidents happening while they are working for you on your farm. It is important to note that this cover does not extend to family members who are under the age of 14. This is because they are not legally entitled to work until they reach the age of 14.

Each year, just before your renewal date, we will contact you to enquire as to what changes may have occurred during the year. We will also ask you for a projection of your annual wages. Note that wages paid to family members should also be included in this projection.

I’VE JUST GOT A FEW ACRES AROUND THE HOUSE. DOES MY HOME INSURANCE PROVIDE COVER FOR ANY FARM RELATED ACTIVITY?

If you have a farm, no matter how small, it’s very important that you have a farm insurance policy and not just a home insurance policy. The difference in premium between the two types of policies could be tiny - whereas the difference in covers is vast. First off, home insurance policies specifically exclude any buildings or contents used for agricultural purposes – they insure only the buildings and contents that are used for domestic and private purposes. In other words the family farm house alone.

And crucially you really need the wide scope of liability cover that a farm policy provides. Say for instance you have your house with a few acres of land which you use for tillage. The public liability cover afforded to you on a farm insurance policy protects you in respect of accidental damage to other people’s property or accidental injury to a person in connection with your occupation as a farmer. A home insurance policy on the other hand, will not cover liability arising from you carrying out any trade, business, profession or employment i.e. in your role as a farmer.

WHAT IS CYBER INSURANCE COVER AND DO FARMERS NEED IT?

Cyber Insurance is for people who use computer systems and the internet to help them run their business. For farmers , that could be everything from automated milking and feeding systems to stock ordering and banking for the farm. Cyber crime is becoming very prolific and dangerous. Cyber hackers are continually trying to gain access to private systems for financial gain. As large firms become more security conscious online, the hackers are looking for vulnerabilities in SME businesses – including farm businesses. Cyber Insurance is a type of policy designed to help these businesses to get back up and running after an attack. The policy covers first party liability - including access to forensic and legal expertise as well as third party liability which aims to compensate anybody who has been negatively impacted as a result of your system being hacked or infected.

This type of cover is now specifically excluded from the policy provided by one large farm insurance company. If your farm is dependent on the internet and a computer system – no matter how basic - talk to our Farm Insurance Advisors. We have just the solution for you. The right insurance cover over at an affordable price.

CAN I INSURE MORE THAN ONE HOUSE ON MY FARM POLICY?

Yes – that’s no problem at all. In fact, it’s a very common occurrence. All of the insurance companies who issue farm policies will insure multiple houses on the farm policy. The houses can be occupied by family members, employees or un-related tenants. Finally, an insured house can be located away from the land.

CAN YOU COVER LISTED BUILDINGS OVER 100 YEARS OLD ON A FARM INSURANCE POLICY?

Yes – buildings from 1800 onwards can be covered. If the property is listed we ask the owner to get the property professionally valued to make sure the reinstatement value is correct. Older structures can be considered on a case by case basis and we recommend you take a picture of your buildings. You can then text or email the photos to us from your phone. That way we will get them properly insured for you.
